Money, explained with pictures

Adding up what you spend, and working out the change you get back.

In everyday life: Buying a snack for Rs 35 with a Rs 50 note.

Change is what is left, not what you paid

Change is what you gave minus what it cost. Give Rs 50 for a Rs 35 item and Rs 15 comes back.

Counting up is often easier than subtracting

From 35 to 40 is 5, and from 40 to 50 is 10. That is Rs 15 in change, worked out without borrowing.

A worked example

You pay Rs 100 for something costing Rs 72. What change do you get?

Rs 28

From 72 up to 80 is 8, and from 80 up to 100 is 20. Together that is 28.
