How to help a 10 year old with maths at home
Cook together
Measure cups and spoons, double a recipe, cut a roti into halves and quarters. Fractions make sense when they can be eaten.
Let them handle money
Give a small amount at the shop and ask how much change should come back before it does.
Read the clock out loud
Ask how long until dinner, or how many minutes the bus ride took. Elapsed time is a Class 4–5 skill.
Look for patterns in tables
Ask why the 5 times table always ends in 0 or 5, or why 9 × 7 and 7 × 9 match, instead of only reciting.
Ask “how do you know?”
When an answer is right, ask for the reason. Explaining is where understanding grows.
