Percentages, explained with pictures

Parts of a whole, always counted out of a hundred.

In everyday life: A 20% discount in a sale, 85% marks in a test, a phone battery at 40%.

Percent means out of a hundred

The whole thing is always 100%, whatever it is — a cake, a class, your battery. 30% means 30 pieces out of 100 equal pieces.

30 squares out of 100

A few percentages are worth just knowing

50% is half. 25% is a quarter, and 75% is three quarters. Most percentage questions can be built out of these.

50% is half
25% is a quarter
75% is three quarters

10% is the one you do in your head

10% is one tenth, which you get by dividing by 10. Once you have 10%, you have 20% by doubling it and 5% by halving it.

Percentages let you compare unequal groups

12 correct out of 20, or 24 correct out of 40? Both are 60%. Turning everything into out of 100 is what makes them comparable.

12 of 20 and 24 of 40 both look like this

A worked example
