Reading a number off a picture — a bar, a circle, a number line.
In everyday life: A progress bar filling up, a pie chart on TV, the marks on a measuring jug.
A bar split into 4 parts with 3 shaded is not a drawing of nothing — it IS 3/4. Learning to read it means you can check an answer without calculating.
Whole numbers, fractions, decimals and negatives all live on the same line. Further right is always bigger. If you can find it on the line, you know how big it is.
A circle is cut into 8 equal slices and 6 are shaded. What fraction is that?
6/8, which is the same as 3/4
8 equal slices makes the bottom number 8, and 6 shaded makes the top number 6. Pairing the slices up shows it is also 3 out of 4.
You will link pictures to the numbers they show, and place numbers at the right spot on a line.
